On October 31st we celebrate Halloween. A very long time ago, some people believed that evil spirits roamed the Earth on this night before the church's celebration of All Saints Day. On All Hallows Even (Halloween) some people would build big bonfires and dress in outfits designed to scare the witches, ghosts, and goblins away. |
| Did you know that the word jack-o'-lantern comes from a fable about a man named Jack who was mean and stingy. When he died he couldn't get into heaven. Since there was no where that he could go, he carved a turnip and put a hot glowing piece of coal in it. He roamed about at night carrying his lantern and became known as Jack of the Lantern or Jack-o'-lantern. | |

Make your own Jack-o'-lantern ** Be sure to get Mom or Dad to help you when you are using a knife. Cut the top off a pumpkin. Can you guess how many seeds are in it. Clean all of the seeds then count them. Compare your guess with the real number of seeds. Spread the seeds out on a table or tray so they can dry. When they are dry, ask Mom or Dad to help you place them in a skillet with some margarine or butter. Brown the pumpkin seeds. Once they are cool, enjoy eating them with family and friends. To make your jack-o'-lantern, choose shapes (triangles, squares, circles, etc.) to design a face. When you are ready, cut out the face on the pumpkin. Put a candle inside the pumpkin and ask Mom or Dad to light it. Now you have your own jack-o'-lantern. |

Ask Mom or Dad to take your picture. Then start again and create another look. |

Before opening a bag of candy for the trick-or-treaters on Halloween, make a guess as to how many pieces of candy are in the bag. Then open and count the number of pieces. Practice math facts by grouping the candy into two sets and combining them to find the sum. |
