Indian Cake
- 4 cups sifted cornmeal
- 3 tablespoons molasses
- Rounded tablespoon of butter
- 2 teaspoons salt
Mix ingredients and add boiling water until mixture is well moistened.
Put into a well-greased baking pan, smooth surface and bake in a hot oven until well
browned.
Indian Pudding
- 3 cups of sweet milk, cornmeal to make it thick like mush
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Let the milk come just to a boil and add the meal, then rest and bake in
a slow oven for 45 minutes.
Squaw Bread
- 1 pint sweet milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons baking powder
- 1 tablespoon shortening
Use enough flour to make a dough, easily handled, knead and roll out to any desired
thickness, cut in pieces, cut 2 slits and cook in kettle of deep fat. Serve with syrup and
crisp bacon.
