NATIVE AMERICAN
Recipes

Look for recipes for Native American foods. Try preparing some of them. If you enjoy the recipe, tell us about it (or send a sample to school for the others to share).

Also, here are some recipes you can try to make at home.

Indian Cake

  • 4 cups sifted cornmeal
  • 3 tablespoons molasses
  • Rounded tablespoon of butter
  • 2 teaspoons salt

Mix ingredients and add boiling water until mixture is well moistened. Put into a well-greased baking pan, smooth surface and bake in a hot oven until well browned.

Indian Pudding

  • 3 cups of sweet milk, cornmeal to make it thick like mush
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Let the milk come just to a boil and add the meal, then rest and bake in a slow oven for 45 minutes.

Squaw Bread

  • 1 pint sweet milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon shortening

Use enough flour to make a dough, easily handled, knead and roll out to any desired thickness, cut in pieces, cut 2 slits and cook in kettle of deep fat. Serve with syrup and crisp bacon.
