Read Books READING TIPS Read Books

1. Read to your children, even when they're at an age when they can read to themselves. This is especially important for new readers, whose comprehension far exceeds their abilities.*
2. Libraries are great, but children like to own books, too. If expense is a problem, consider used bookstores, yard sales, or book sales at your local library.
3. Take turns reading out loud. Some books are hard for children, especially new readers, to read alone. Let your child read one page; you read the next.
4. Read some children's books yourself, especially the kind you'd like your children to read. It's fun for them to have an informal book talk with Mom or Dad, and have their own opinions about character and events listened to respectfully and taken seriously.
